Former RAF Worker Dies of Cancer because of Smoking, Asbestos Exposure

(Swindon, UK - January 26, 2011) Authorities said Monday that RAF Fairford employee, Carroll Jerome De Castellnou Trilles, died of lung cancerdue to a combined result of asbestosis and heavy smoking.

Ian Singleton, assistant deputy coroner for Wiltshire and Swindon, after post-mortem examination of Trilles, said he died of lung cancer contributed to by excessive exposure to asbestos. Singleton noted in a statement that Trilles accidentally died due to tobacco use combined with asbestos exposure.

According to the reports, the 67-year old pensioner formerly worked as an airframe fitter at Royal Air Force station in Gloucestershire, England from 1969 to 1973. RAF is a standby airfield most prominently used in recent years as an airfield for the United States Air Force. In a letter from his brother, he noted that Trilles had a variety of tasks, which are mainly involved in the operation of asbestos, shortly after Trilles left RAF.

On November 9, 2009, Trilles started complaining of a prolonged cough with some blood, but no chest pain. In January, after his cough was temporarily relieved, doctors advised Trilles to attend a weekly chest clinic, but he had not been keen on attending. In March, Trilles? cough returned with similar symptoms involving coughing blood and a chest infection which was treated by antibiotics.

In July very last year, Trilles was finally diagnosed with non-operable cancer and it was advised he take a course of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Medical professionals stated that heavy smoking for over the last fifty years contributed to the disease. Reports said that Trilles continued to attend a chest clinic and took part in other medical tests until the day of his death. Delivering the verdict after the inquest, deputy officials concluded that a combination of smoking and asbestos exposure led to Trilles? passing away.
